Majikoi ~ Oh! Samurai Girls is another anime based on another eroge starring a guy surrounded by a bunch of girls that are in love with him.
It does have one different from the typical eroge to anime adaptation though, the protagonist isn’t a coward and knows exactly who he wants from the start and doesn’t hide it.
Though, even the protagonist couldn’t save it from being kinda stupid in the end. Each of the girl’s (except Momoyo and Miyako) reasons for liking him are nonsensical at best. You have the foreign exchange student who I honestly couldn’t even find any reason at all other than being friends with him, the awkward shy girl (who I also think is a psychopath) who he talked to and that was enough for her, and Momoyo’s sister Kazuko who I almost believe only likes Yamato simply because her sister does.
Same stereotypical harem anime characters, just all of them happen to know some form of martial arts or other fighting style. Which, really adds nothing since when the main story starts, they do barely anything. The main story also feels forced since it starts almost halfway through. Robot chick wants to destroy Japan, Yamato and the gang won’t let that happen.
What is even worse is the ending. It felt rushed and had little to no explanation as to just wtf happened. But once again, I’m sure that it may be better explained in the eroge, but even then, it probably wouldn’t be that much better.
Animation wise, it was standard. Don’t expect anything along the lines of Fate/Zero, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Bakemonogatari, or Clannad. Fight scenes consist of about 10 frames for the most part since a lot of times they resort to swinging at each other a lot. When they use one of their special moves, there is a good chance that is the only one you will ever see, and a lot of the people know the same Kawakami fighting style.
Backdrops mostly consisted of the dorm and the same river area. Had plenty of colors, but had an almost washed out look. Nothing was too detailed either, but I didn’t expect it to be either.
Overall, while enjoyable, it definitely isn’t going to go down as anything great or as a must watch. Yamato was one of the main reasons for even watching this since he was a likable character. Miyako did have some funny scenes though, which was surprising. But even then, the funniest scenes always came from Yamato.
Worthy of a rent/stream for most, not exactly something I would buy blindly, but I could see myself buying it on sale once it does come out on DVD later this year.
luckily, you can watch it for free with ads or with a premium account on Crunchyroll right now, so you can easily watch it.
